The Florida Times-Union

Enterprise Reporter

Jacksonville , FL

Full Time

The Florida Times-Union is looking for an enterprise reporter.

This reporter will be part of a team that covers Jacksonville’s vast consolidated government. The position primarily focuses on the city’s major independent agencies: The port, the electric and water utility and the transportation and aviation authorities.

But to be clear: We are not looking for someone content to cover meetings and write about budgets. Past reporters who have held this job have covered the sinking of a cargo ship at sea and the subsequent government investigation into why it happened, a public-records scandal at the electric and water utility and a federal corruption investigation at the port. Do you like politics? Good. There’s plenty of it. Business reporting? Great – the port is competing for federal money to compete with rivals along the East Coast. Interested in the environment? The port’s plans include the unprecedented dredge of a major waterway that crosses through downtown, and the electric and water utility has for years grappled with layers of local, state and federal regulations.

This reporter would work closely with colleagues who cover City Hall and may sometimes step in to write about the mayor or City Council, or collaborate on larger stories. We want a curious and hungry reporter who can develop sources and isn’t afraid to dig. In fact, digging is an essential part of the job: Dailies are expected, but meaningful enterprise work is the goal.
